With deep regret and sadness, we share the passing of David H. Krantz on Saturday, May 20th. During the most challenging years of our department, when the department was unstable and small, Dave was our most potent protector and advocate on campus. Dave was appointed Chair of Statistics In 1990 with a mandate to search for new faculty in mathematical and applied statistics. During Krantz’s two years as chair, the department began to rebuild, including appointing Paul Meier and tendering a joint appointment to Shaw-Hwa Lo, who later was appointed the department’s director of graduate studies. Upon the news of Dave’s passing, Professor Lo remembered that: “As a senior faculty member at Columbia, Dave always kept an eye out for and spoke on behalf of junior faculty and researchers when their voices were more likely to be stifled and their interests overlooked. He was, in all senses, big-brained and big-hearted. We will miss him.”
