Teaching Awards Recipients Named by the Department of Statistics at Columbia University

The Columbia University Department of Statistics is thrilled to announce the 2024 PhD student departmental awards recipients. Dr. Jiajin Sun, a shining example of excellence in teaching, has been awarded the 2024 Howard Levene Outstanding Teaching Award, which is given to a student who has demonstrated exceptional teaching skills and dedication to their students. Similarly, Dr. Gan Yuan, a paragon of teaching assistantship, has been honored with the 2024 Minghui Yu Teaching Assistant Award, a well-deserved accolade for his commitment to his role and his students.

Established in honor of Professor Howard Levene, the first scholar to earn a PhD from the Columbia University Department of Statistics, the Howard Levene Outstanding Teaching Award symbolizes teaching excellence. Dr. Jiajin Sun, who earned his PhD in Statistics in Summer 2024, embodies this award with his unique blend of passion, patience, and innovative teaching methods. His five years of exceptional work in teaching assistantships and instructor roles, as well as his unwavering dedication to research excellence, make him a worthy recipient. In the Fall of 2024, Dr. Sun will continue his academic journey at the Department of Statistics at Florida State University as an Assistant Professor, inspiring a new generation of statisticians. 

Minghui Yu was a gifted scholar whose life ended tragically during his tenure as a PhD student in the Columbia University Department of Statistics (2007-2008). He is remembered as an endearing and active member of the Department and greater University. Dr. Gan Yuan, who earned his PhD in Statistics in Spring 2024, embodies the very spirit of Minghui Yu, both through his amiable, modest, and easy-going character and through his dedication to excellence in teaching assistantship, where his students state that Gan is kind, patient, and “the best teacher [they] have ever met.” Dr. Gan Yuan will join the Department of Biostatistics at the City University of Hong Kong as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2024.
