Lunch with Dr. Dobrin Marchev – Informal Faculty Talks with MA Students
This event is especially valuable for those who are interested in exploring a Mentored Research Project (GR 5398) in the future.
Talk title: “Monte Carlo Methods in Statisics”
Join us for this informal get together. We will hear briefly about Dr. Marchev’s interests in research. There will be time for everyone to ask questions and introduce themselves.
Invitation and RSVP can be found in the weekly MA Statistics Newsletter.
Review of the Event by Milton Lim; MA Statistics Student; President, Columbia Statistics Club
“Professor Dobin Marchev completed his PhD in Statistics at University of Florida in 2004. Dobrin presented his research interests in Markov Chain Monte Carlo, which has revolutionized the computation of Bayesian models in allowing sampling from intractable probability distributions. Dobrin gave a historical overview of MCMC, including its origin story during the Manhattan Project, where the first cyclotron (particle accelerator) was built in the basement of Pupin Laboratories of Columbia! Since then, the original algorithm has evolved through many variations, such as Metropolis-Hastings, Gibbs sampling, and Hamiltonian MCMC.”
