Tuition is determined by a registration category known as a Residence Unit. A student must complete two Residence Units and at least 30 course credits to graduate. Students in the hybrid online/on-campus program earn a maximum of 12 points and one full RU (Residence Unit) in the first semester, which is the only online semester. International students must register full time, even in the first semester. The remaining courses completed on campus will total whatever is needed to meet the 30 credit minimum requirement.
The breakdown of Registration Categories are as follows:
|Statistics Hybrid RU Categories||Call Number|
|Full Residence Unit (RU)||20 or fewer credits||99991|
|Extended Residence (ER)||Required after completing TWO Residence Units||77771|
|Half Residence Unit (HR)||When registering for three or fewer courses||99992|
|Quarter Residence Unit (QR)||When registering for two or fewer courses||99993|
For specific questions about Tuition and RU’s associated with this program or financial aid, please reach out to the Office of Financial Aid at GSAS. Registering for an RU is the same process as for your classes.
Tuition and Residence Units for International Students
International students on an F-1 visa must register for one Full Residence Unit each semester until completing two full RUs. After completing TWO Full RUs, all students must sign up for the Extended Residence Unit. The rule is here. International students are encouraged to see their ISSO adviser for any additional information. All international student schedules should include:
- Semester 1 – 1 RU
- Semester 2 – 1 RU
- Semester 3 – ER (Extended Residence)*
The MA degree requires students to register for a minimum of 2 RU’s in addition to completing course requirements. *International students may take a summer course by registering for Extended Residence (ER) – if any of the classes are to count towards the MA Statistics degree program.
Health Insurance Fees
Students do not need to enroll in the Columbia Student Medical Insurance Plan during the online portion of the Hybrid Program. Upon arrival for the on campus portion of the program, students will automatically be enrolled in a CU health insurance plan unless selecting to waive out. This is an additional fee that all full time students on campus incur per semester. Please see the GSAS website for more information on Health insurance. Students can also visit the Columbia Health Website for additional details.
There are additional fees that are incurred once arriving for the on campus portion (Spring Year 1 semester) of the program. Please refer to the GSAS Guide on student fees for more information.
